M: Hello, I’m Maxim Vengarov, and I’m very happy to share with you my connection with open Tchaikovsky Competition. It was June 1986 when I came to Moscow to participate in open Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 10 from Chelyabinsk. This was actually the turning point of my life. Then I attended a world music festival in Berlin. And it was interesting to say that a kid made his breakthroughalready at the age of 10. And that was me. Now as a judge of the competition, I can see clearly the huge challenges facing the musicians in the competition. Where else can you see young players playing within ten days—classical works and Russian traditional music before coming to the final stage? As a musician, it’s important to give maximum attention and time to your own reflections of your own feelings. So, what I’m really looking for in the competition is to meet someone who can touch me musically. I want to see the seed, at least the seed of the great tree that can grow. I would go for this violinist. I would go for this musician.

got good advice from some famous athletes on how to improve our skills and build up our body.
Today, we’ll hear something different. We’re honored to have Emma Wilson here. Emma is a
health expert and lecturer from UBC, the University of British Columbia. Emma worked for a
football team in Manchester, then for a very successful rugby team in Dublin, and finally ended up
working here in Vancouver. Emma says it’s challenging to be a health expert, because people can
be easily influenced by advertisements that lack scientific support. Also, people aren’t willing to
change their views about food and nutrition as there is so much confusing information online. It’s
really important to hear what experts say, and that’s why we’ve invited Emma here. She isn’t
going to tell us about everything we should eat. But, she will teach us to make better choices.

M: Being an athlete is very fun, painful and exciting. Every time I come to the track, I feel like I’m out of this
place. This is Botswana National Stadium. This is where I train. When I saw Usain Bolt running in 2012 London
Olympics, I was amazed. Just watching him run got me motivated. I quit being a chess player and started to run. I
went to the 2016 Olympics, and went to the finals at the age of 18. And, wow, I finished fifth. It was a dream come
true to me, but I still wanted more. The training is super hard, but the hardest part for me is that I got an injury—an
injury which may take me out for years. For a period of time, as a young athlete, I didn’t know what to do. I lost
focus. But now, I’m back on the track. I really want to be there at the Olympics, and do what I did before, do much,
much greater. I don’t care about the gold. I don’t care about the silver. I want to do my best. You know, take
everything and show it to the world.

W: Hello, everyone. Today I'll talk about how to improve your pronunciation. Language researchers say pronunciation and fluency are the biggest barriers, followed by grammar in effective spoken English. However, most people don't regard pronunciation as a very important part of communication skills. They're more focused on vocabulary. One reason is that most people are not even aware of their mispronunciations. So it's important to first find out the words you mispronounce. You should listen to experts. By experts, I mean those who are less likely to make pronunciation mistakes. When listening to them, pay attention to words that sounds strange. Strange, because you pronounce the same words differently. When you come across such words, check dictionary to confirm their exact pronunciations. You can also search for difficult pronounced words and names, and make a list of them. The last suggestion is to read aloud. Now you've got the correct pronunciations of the words. It's time to practice reading them every day.

W: Talking about personal relationships, well, I’d naturally think of my relationship with my mother. Whenever I need help, my mother is always there for me. She often tells me that I can be anyone I want, as long as I’m confident of myself. She sees my talent and pushes me to do the best I possibly can. As I was growing up, we were often on the move. I had to admit that moving so often made me feel lonely. But my mother did everything she could to help me feel happy. In fact, so much traveling was really a good thing because it made us close. I respect my mother so much as she never treats me as a child, but as an equal. She gives me the freedom to make mistakes and to learn from them all. Unlike friendships that can fade or break, I know I’ll always be connected to my mother no matter what I face. She is not just a role model, but someone I love.

M: Hello, I’m Jeff Anderson from Coventry, England. And in today’s program, I’d like to share with you a special kind of English culture — the football. A lot of people in England are crazy about football. During the football season whenever there is a big match, all the flags for local football teams, such as Liverpool and Newcastle, are hung outside every window, or even spread proudly on T-shirts or scarves. There is an atmosphere of excitement in the air. Groups of young men crowd into dark, packed pubs staring at television screens. Of course they are covered head to toe in the colors of their team. They shout and scream in sadness when their team loses a goal, or with joy when there is a moment of success. You do not have to be a fan of football to get caught up in the excitement. As far as victories are concerned, England had its big moment in 1966 in Wembley Stadium. The World Cup victory is in the hearts and minds of all football fans. Now, whenever England is playing a big match, red and white covers every inch of every pub, a symbol of hope — the English flag. While football has never been something I am particularly interested in, for years, I’ve had to pretend excitement and pick a team to support. You cannot say you don’t like or do not follow football in England, as often this would lead to a long dialogue in which someone would begin telling you why you should support their team.

They hope to discourage the seabirds from wandering onto the highway. The area is home to large crowds of birds that come to stay for the season.
Young birds are often attracted to the warm road surface and get killed by the traffic. Biologist student Hannah tells the broadcaster, “The youngsters’ feathers are brown in color. The dark-colored road surface makes the youngsters hard to be noticed.
As the number of tourists has grown, so has the amount of traffic on the roads.” Biologist Christan says the plan is to see how the birds respond to the multicolored road this summer, and if it works, the idea could spread to other parts of the country.

W: My name is Emily. I had been a dancer for quite a long time—I started studying ballet when I was six years old. By the time I was nine, I was dancing five days a week. When I was eighteen, I decided that I really preferred contemporary dance and that I wanted to do it professionally. So, I applied successfully for the training program at the School of Toronto Dance Theater and moved to Toronto to attend the program. That was the period of time I enjoyed most in Toronto. I graduated on scholarship and danced professionally for ten years, but after all those years, I found that dance was gradually becoming something that felt like more of a burden than a joy; I found myself increasingly unwilling to drag myself to dance performances, so I quit. I do miss dance often, but it makes me happy to think that I’ll never have to go to another training session again.

A listener in China, Wang Ming, who is about to get an engineering degree, wants to know how American college graduates find jobs. Right now, the answer is: not very easily. A latest study on the college job market showed that employers wanted to hire 22% fewer graduates this year than last. The study also showed that just 20% of those who looked for jobs before graduation have found one by now. This is compared to half of students who had looked for a job by this time two years ago. But one difference: fewer of this year’s graduates have started to search for jobs. Engineering graduates were more likely to have started their job search already, and to have accepted a job. This is among the best-paid professions for people with just a college degree. On average, engineering majors expect to start at about $62,000 a year.

It is the center of an important industry in the everyday life of the British people. Tea is the British national drink. About 30 percent of the world’s export of tea makes its way to London. And Britain is by far the largest importer of tea in the world. Now in the second picture, you can see how tea is tasted in the Tea Trade Centre before it is sold. Here, different types of tea are tasted by skilled tea-tasters before they are sold at each week’s tea sale. It’s amazing to see them at work! Over a hundred kinds of tea are laid out in a line on a long table. The tasters generally taste tea with milk, since that is how the majority of British people drink their tea. The tasters move down the line with surprising speed, tasting from a spoon and deciding what is a fair price for each tea.

M: Well, I’d love to share with you my personal opinions on city life and life in small towns. I grew up in a small town until I was 18 and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides of both. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I can’t imagine ever living in a small town again. Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transport. In a small town, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. You can’t get around without one because there isn’t any kind of public transport. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there you have a choice of taking public transport, which is cheaper than driving. So, if you don’t have a car, you’d better live in the city. I also love the exciting life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and other wonderful shows. However, these things are not common in small towns. The final thing I like about large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. However, you seldom find such a variety of people in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become dull. Of course, safety should be considered, and that’s one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more careful and live in a large city than to feel safe but dull.

M: At the beginning of the tour, we’ll start with the most important place in my town, which is the Plaza Leon. The Plaza Leon, which is more than 100 years old, is a gathering place for young people on Friday and Saturday nights, and for parents and children on Sunday afternoons. Four streets lead to the Plaza, which have white sidewalks and treeline. Hernandes Street, which was named after a famous writer born in the city, contains all of the food stores, fish markets and vegetable stands. Femando Street, which was named after an educator, is where all of the government offices are housed. Via del Mar Street, whose roads are made of stones, is the only street which still has its old surface. Finally we come to Horatio Street on which there are two universities, one of them is the most famous university in my country. That’s why it’s my favorite street of all.

who the oldest person in the world is? There is only one place where you’ll find all
these information, and that’s in the Guinness Book ofWorld Records. This morning
we have someone from the Guinness Company that produced that famous book,
Thomas Manning. “Welcome to the program, Thomas!” “Thanks, Sue. It’s a pleasure
to be here.” “Perhaps you could start by telling us where the idea for the book came
from.” “Well, it was first suggested in the early 1950s. Sir Hugh Beaver, the
managing director of Guinness, was out shooting birds with some friends. A bird flew
away so quickly that no one was able to shoot it. Sir Hugh wondered whether this bird
was the fastest bird in Europe, and if it wasn’t the fastest, he wondered what was.”
“So I suppose he went to the nearest library to look for the information and he
couldn’t find it?” “Yes, that’s exactly what happened. And this made Sir Hugh think
there must be other people in the same situation who wanted this kind of information.
He thought that, like himself, people would be interested in finding facts of all records
to satisfy their curiosity.” “So the idea for a book of records was born. And when did
the first book come out?” “A few years later, in 1955. So, to ask your first question:
the tallest person in the world is 231.7cm tall. And the oldest person is Jeanne. L.

M：We are glad to have Dr Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by asking the first question. Does everyone dream?
W：It appears that everyone does. Mostly when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don't remember their dreams or they don't think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made one with a child when they first report their dreams or it was so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. The other day someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer, but suddenly he stopped having dreams. I asked him what had happened. It turned out that his brother died of a heart attack and he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a young person. Generally, when they are with some frightening events and dream about it was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about it. Actually, the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming, because it means that the bad experience was too painful to even appear in dreams. As long as you are dreaming about it and even if the dreams are frightening, your mind is working on it. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place in dreams. When a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill, or when a person has been really sad, if people turn off their dreams totally, it means they don't allow themselves to even think about it.

Then the guide tour of science labs at 10:20 am, here you can see the subjects that new students will be studying. You will also notice that our labs have excellent equipment. At 11:00 am, you will be guided to the tool to practical areas. This covers our technical workshops, music, and other areas of our school life. At Montfort, we believe in all around development of our students.
Lunch will be at 12:00. It has been specially prepared for our guests. All our teachers and student leaders will be present to answer any questions that you have in your minds. We are so happy that you could be with us today.
